About the Doctor

Dr. Marigie Olvina is a board-certified Radiation Oncologist with over 23 years of experience in the field of radiation therapy. She obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Santo Tomas (1997) and completed her internship at Veterans Memorial Medical Center. She then underwent specialized residency training in Radiotherapy at the Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center from 1999 to 2002.

Certified by the Philippine Radiation Oncology Society in 2003, Dr. Olvina has since built an extensive career providing expert radiation oncology services in both public and private institutions across the Philippines.

Her professional affiliations include the European Society of Therapeutic and Radiation Oncology, Philippine Radiation Oncology Society (former board member), and the Philippine Society of Oncologists, where she is a Fellow.

Dr. Olvina’s commitment to excellence in cancer care is further reflected in her active participation in international conferences, numerous guest lectures, and research contributions, particularly in advanced treatment planning and IMRT (Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy).

Principal investigator for OP-1250-301/OPERA -01. A phase 3 Randomised , open-label study of OP-1250 Monotherapy VS standard of care for the treatment of ER+ve, HER2-ve Advanced or metastatic breast cancer following endocrine and CDK4/6 inhibitor therapy.
Sub-principal investigator for ARCHERY clinical trial. Artificial Intelligence based radiotherapy treatment planning for cervical and head and neck cancer.
Sub-principal investigator for Exelixis. A Randomised open-label phase 3 study of XL092+Nivolumab vs sunitinib in subjects with advanced or metastatic non-clear cell renal carcinoma.
Sub-principal investigator for INAVO. A Phase III, Randomized , double blind, placebo-controlled study evaluating the efficacy and safety of inavolisib plus Palbociclib and fulvestrant versus placebo plus pablociclib and fulvestrant in patients with PIK3CA-mutant, hormone receptor positive, HER2-negative locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer.
Key team member on the retrospective study comparing postmastectomy breast cancer patients with breast implant who had radiotherapy versus surgery alone between 2014-2020. Involved in developing the standard/ criteria, questionnaires for patients and data collection. The project is still on going and expected to complete in August 2021.
First author in retrospective study on the correlation of distance between a central tumour and central structures and the effect on survival for patients receiving lung SABR (stereotactic ablative radiotherapy.) Responsible in developing the objective, data collection, perform statistical analysis and summarising the report. As a result of this study, it has demonstrated that the central location of the tumour may predict the overall survival in patients receiving stereotactic ablative radiotherapy to the lung. Abstract has been accepted by the World Conference on Lung Cancer 2021 and poster due to be presented orally on the 8th of September 2021.
First author in retrospective study to compare dosimetric difference on treatment volume (PTV cm3) and lung V20 in patients receiving lung stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) based on use of abdominal compression. Responsible in developing the objective, data collection, perform statistical analysis and summarising the report This study has shown a non-significant trend towards reduced PTV and lung V20 in a cohort of patients whereby virtue of tumour position we would have expected the values to be larger than our comparator group. We conclude this is evidence supporting the use of abdominal compression and suggest this could be extended to other situations where reducing the PTV size may be beneficial eg treatment of more central tumours. Abstract has been accepted by the British Thoracic Oncology Group (BTOG) Conference. Poster was presented on the 23rd of April 2021.
Co-author in auditing the changes in the management of patients having radical radiotherapy for lung cancer in the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic (COVID-RT Lung). This is a multicentre UK audit which involved patients with stage 1-3 lung cancer referred for radical radiotherapy between April and October 2020. Patients with alterations in their management during COVID- 19 pandemic and those who continue with standard management are included in the audit. As a result, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in increased use of hypofractionated and ultrahypofractionated radiotherapy schedules. The outcome was presented in the National Cancer Research Institute conference in October 2020. Abstract was submitted to the World Conference on Lung Cancer.
Lead and first author of a retrospective study on the outcome of PARP-Inhibitor as a maintenance therapy in patients with newly diagnosed advanced ovarian cancer and platinum -sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer. An audit to assess real life experience in South Yorkshire between January 2017-December 2019. Involved in developing the criteria, data collections, analysing data and report summary. The results indicate that BRCA mutation patients have better outcome compared to BRCA negative patients. Overall median time between commencement of treatment and disease progression for both BRCA and non-BRCA is 8 months. The study was completed in May 2018 and was presented in the local Postgraduate Medical Education Meeting on the 16th of August 2019. This was also reviewed in the annual appraisal and received excellent feedbacks and further re-auditing will follow.
Co-author of the retrospective study of the outcome and factors predicting survival and completion of Radium 223 in metastatic castrate resistant Prostate Cancer (mCRPC). Involved in developing the criteria, data collections and result discussions. The study has showed that overall median survival of 4.5 months for Ra-223 patients observed inferior to that reported for both the Ra-223 and placebo group (14.3 vs 11.2months) in ALSYMPCA trial. PSA does not reflect response to Ra-223 treatment. Alkaline phosphatase is a marker of bone turnover and has been used as a surrogate marker for disease response. A higher neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratios is also an independent survival predictor in mCRPC patients receiving Ra-223. This audit was published in the Clinical Oncology Journal Volume 30, Issue 9, September 2018, Pages 548-555 2017.
Lead and involved in audit on monitoring heart failure in GP practice in 2007. Developed the criteria, involved in data collections, summary report and presentation. The outcome of the audit has led to development of a standard Performa as part of the follow up in heart failure patients.

Audit on Managing of Acute Gastroenteritis in children in 2006. Developed the criteria, questionnaires, data collection and analysing data. As a result, this has led to a development of a Performa that has been used in Children’s Outpatient, admission unit and A&E.
