Prostate Cancer

Personalised treatments designed to fight cancer while minimising side effects.

What is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer begins in the prostate gland, a small organ located below the bladder in men that produces seminal fluid. It is one of the most common cancers among men worldwide. Prostate cancer often grows slowly and may not cause symptoms in the early stages, but some types can be aggressive and spread rapidly without timely treatment.

How common is prostate cancer in the Philippines?

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among Filipino men, and the risk generally increases with age.

According to the IARC Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN 2022):

  • Prostate cancer is the 3rd most common cancer in men in the Philippines, with an estimated 9,764 new cases in 2022 (about 11.8% of new cancers in males).
  • Across both sexes, prostate cancer ranked 5th overall in new cancer cases in 2022 (9,764 cases; 5.2% of all new cancers).
  • Prostate cancer caused an estimated 3,850 deaths in 2022 (ranked 9th among cancer deaths nationwide).

These figures highlight why awareness, timely consultation for symptoms, and appropriate evaluation are important—especially for older men.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Prostate Cancer?

In its early stages, prostate cancer may not show noticeable symptoms. When symptoms do appear, they can include:

These symptoms can also be caused by non-cancerous conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), but it is important to consult a doctor if they persist.

How is Prostate Cancer Diagnosed?

Doctors may recommend several tests if prostate cancer is suspected:

  • Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test – measures PSA levels which can be elevated in cancer
  • Digital rectal examination (DRE) – allows the doctor to feel for abnormalities in the prostate
  • MRI scans or ultrasound – provide detailed imaging
  • Prostate biopsy – confirms the presence of cancer cells

What Are the Causes and Risk Factors of Prostate Cancer?

The exact cause of prostate cancer is not known, but several risk factors increase the likelihood of developing it:

What Are the Types of Prostate Cancer?

Most prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas, which develop from the glandular cells. Less common types include small cell carcinomas, neuroendocrine tumours, and transitional cell carcinomas.

What Are the Stages of Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is staged based on how far it has spread:

Stage I

Confined to a small part of the prostate

Still within the prostate but may be larger or involve both lobes

Spread beyond the prostate to nearby tissues such as seminal vesicles

Spread to lymph nodes, bones, or other organs

What are the Treatments for Prostate Cancer?

Treatment depends on the stage, overall health, and patient preferences. Options include:

Active Surveillance

Monitoring low-risk cancers closely.

Surgery (Radical Prostatectomy)

Removal of the prostate gland.

Radiotherapy

External beam or brachytherapy.

Hormonal Therapy

Lowering testosterone levels that fuel cancer growth.

Targeted Therapy

For advanced or resistant cancers.

Immunotherapy

In select cases.

Advances in treatment allow many men to live long lives after prostate cancer diagnosis.
